Hello ! We are happy to welcome all the pupils from Wells-next-the-sea on this blog. We are ready to work with you on our project and we hope you are going to enjoy surfing the Internet with us. Pretty soon a page in English (on the right) will explain to you what we expect from you and you will have to read and accept a "charter" (the most important rules to respect).
We have already written portraits of all the pupils in our class (5ème 2) so that you might meet us. See you soon.

The pupils of 5ème 2

As a teacher of English I have organized a few trips to Great Britain. Here are my favourite sights of Great Britain. I hope you will enjoy them : feel free to comment them.
My first favourite sight is London of course. I have visited this city seven times. I love these photos below (trip to London March 2005) because they show how much London is both modern (the Gherkin) and old (the Tower of London, Tower Bridge). The guide is telling us about the history of London and the renovation of the docks. I had never visited the docks before and I advise you to do it. You will see many shops, restaurants, pubs and flats as well as many places worth of interest. Life is very expensive in London : that's the main problem. But there are many free museums and its cultural life is extraordinary. But never go to the Millenium Lodge in London (it's a youth hostel)! It's not very expensive but... you will never forget it !

On this photo we are in Stonehenge in England. I love this place because it's kind of magic. Some people can only see dull stones, others think extraterrestrials landed there. I just consider this place fantastic as regards to its history.  This place has been considered sacred for over 5000 years ! There is an atmosphere you can't feel elsewhere. We were there in May 2007 with 52 French pupils. It is a World Heritage Site.

Another beautiful sight in Great Britain is Bath. I went there for the first time in 1987(I was 18 !, now you may guess my age) ! It is so beautiful that I went back to Bath 3 more times with pupils (1997, 2000, 2007). The Roman Bath is very interesting because it was a Celtic worship place but was changed into a Roman Bath : the Godess Sulis Minervae (Sulis was a Celtic godess and Minerva her Roman counterpart) was worshipped by all the tribes and people whatever their religion or origins. This is a good example of  tolerance !

The XVIII and XIX century architecture in Bath is really amazing. We can see here one part of the "Circus". Go to Pulteney Bridge and to the Royal Crescent : you will be impressed and you will understand why this town became a World Heritage Site (it is protected by the U.N.E.S.C.O). I love going to Cardiff. We organized an exchange with a school in Cardiff in 1997 with my friend Mr Leyraud. I really appreciate Welsh life each time I have the opportunity to go there.  Our pupils love visiting Big Pit, a former coal mine (a colliery), because we go down the mine (60 meters below the ground) and we wear helmets with lamps. We understand a bit better what children's life was like at the end of the XIX century. Their working and living conditions were appalling. French children understand then how lucky they are !

Of course Cardiff Castle and the Millennium Stadium are worth being visited. This photo was taken from the top of the Norman keep. In this stadium the French rugby team won against the "All black" team (last world cup, in 2007). But then they lost against the English team in France !

Another beautiful sight is Brighton and its piers or its breathtaking Royal Pavilion. You will be surprised, amazed, astonished ... Every room is a wonder : you have the impression to live in an Asian Palace. Then walk in the town and try to find your way in the lanes.

I have been to York, Leeds, Bristol, NottIngham, Birmingham and Wolver-Hampton but my photos are too old or horrible, or I simply forgot to take photos. If you want to see some more photos click on the album "my favourite sights in Great Britain" : you will see photos of Eton College, the changing of the guard in Buckingham Palace, Hampton court...etc. If you want to send me photos of your favourite sights in Great Britain, do it ! I will be glad to show them.

Here are a few photos taken in Ireland. I've been there four times (twice in 1993, once in 2000 and in 2006). I love this country and its people. They welcome foreigners very warmly and they are so nice ! I've got a few friends in Ireland : Brian, Joe and Alan.  I will never forget their "pub crawling" or the concerts we went to see in Dublin.

A few sights in Dublin. Dubliners love coloured houses and doors.  If you like Georgian houses and painted doors, go to Merrion Square.

The ha'penny bridge (they used to pay a toll : half a penny) over the Liffey river. In the background we can see Dublin castle and the top of Christ Church cathedral.

Trinity College is a beautiful place. It is a university and a museum : you must visit the Long room and see the Book of Kells (written by monks in the middle ages!). We went there with 69 pupils from France !

This is St Stephen's green shopping centre. We arrived 2 days after St Patrick's day, that's why there are so many green signs. As it was raining outside, we enjoyed the warmth of this place.

Christ Church Cathedral and Dublinia  (a museum about life in Dublin after the Viking invasion). This cathedral is so well-carved !

Outside Dublin the landscapes are gorgeous ! Have a look ! You can see landscapes in the Connemara region (north west) or near Glendalough (south east).

Dolmens in the western part of Ireland (between Limerick and Galway) along the road.

Don't forget that Ireland is an island : here are a few photos of "sea-side Ireland" (a few boats in Wexford, a beach in Donegal,  the Giant's causeway in Ulster).

There are also many big lakes like Lough Neagh in Ulster. You come accross sheep and cows everywhere in Ireland. Here are a few examples.

Now three of my favourite sights :  a photo of an old man on a horse-drawn coach on the Aran Islands, a photo of the old Abbey of Glendalough and a photo of Kilkenny castle.
